Alvor's magic lagoon Fitting in kiting into the busy lessons schedule has been tough, but I finally had a day off yesterday. It's great how the wind comes up almost every day now that we are in the season. However it is pretty hard to predict just how strong it can be. Yesterday I went out on a 12m GK Trix and was super powered up - honestly a bit overpowered to pull controlled tricks (I was hoping to learn my board offs, but kept getting ripped out of the water).
Today was better. I had two small spaces of time before and after lessons to get out and have fun. Earlier was on my 11m SS Fuel, which is just fabulous. It was fun to show off with some dead-man jumps, but the backroll with a foot-out is still tormenting me - I can do it, but not cleanly or committed. But blind riding is getting better and better - now to throw it unhooked and add a handle-pass at the end :)
Later, the wind was stronger and I got to demo a new Best Kahoona. What a fun kite! It doesn't have the poppy thrust of my C or my Monkey kite, and I was a tiny bit overpowered, but it was just a great kite and let me unleash a whole load of tricks very comfortably. Not bad for a day of teaching ;)

Uma sessão clássica no Guincho!! Após mais um dia de trabalho, rumei para variar :) até ao Guincho para mais uma sessão muito curtida, com cerca de 20 nós, e metro de onda!
Deixo algumas fotos gentilmente cedidas pelo Mestre António :D , um dos riders mais locals do Guincho, que por diversas vezes abdica de estar dentro de água, para tirar uma pixs de excelente qualidade, como estas que vos deixo...

Gusty good time We had a great session yesterday at the Alvor lagoon with an incoming tide and strong winds. It was about 24 knots average, but gusted to 27 or so at times, making my 7m Monkey kite a great ride. Occasionally it would drop right off into the teens, making us all struggle for a moment, but it always came back.
We had a nice little multinational group consisting of English, Spanish, Polish, and Slovakian, so communication was fun, to say the least. But we all had enough space, especially on our 2nd session with the tide had filled in a bit more.
Big jumps were the order of the day, but a couple of kiteloops and backrolls to play in the mix a bit too. As far as wind quality, it was probably the worst day I've seen here so far (not that it was anywhere as bad as other spots I've riddent) but still, most excellent fun! We topped it off with Italian and a couple of well deserved beers in the town afterwards.

Return of the good weather Well we had a bit of a cold spell last week, with light stormy conditions for our demo day. Unfortunate, but still the big Waimann was responsive enough to make a couple of jumps in the poor conditions.
Saturday proved kiteable, but a bit dull on 11m Globerider school kite. Big floaty jumps occasionally, but the cold got to me quickly - maybe I'll be in a wetsuit soon, like the locals!
Today was lovely - sunny and warm with a nice 17 knots. Ideal for my 11m Slingshot Fuel. I waited till near the end of the day, hoping for the wind to fill in, so was one of only 3 kiters in the lagoon. I had fun with some BIG jumps and some committed boned-out tricks: foot-outs, grabs, and even a nice big kiteloop - that's what it's all about :D

First weekend at the Ria de Alvor lagoon 4 sessions in 3 days - not bad by any measure. The wind is a little hole-y earlier in the day, but builds nicely to the high teens. The hot sun in a clear blue sky makes the cooling wind very welcome. And the shallow lagoon warms up nicely, while the wind chop is at a minimum. All in all, a great flat-water location.
The first day, Saturday 5 June, I rode on the Lagos side early in the day. A narrow bumpy track leads right the water's edge. I rode an 11m C kite and was powered enough to go up wind, but because of the holes and because I would have like one kite size bigger, there wasn't much jumping.
Later that day I went to the Alvor side, where I met some locals who showed me the walking track to their launch spot. I waited for some of the visiting kiters to quit as there was limited space at low tide. Finally when I got out, I was well pleased. Still on the 11m, I was jumping high and having fun in the warm, flat water. Unlike some places that see thermal winds die down near the end of the day, this spot got stronger near sunset. After an hour or more, I decided I was tired (I haven't kited much as it is the calm season before winter in New Zealand). Also, the wind was getting stronger and I didn't bring my smaller kite out to the beach.
Day 2, Sunday 6 June, the visiting kiters had left, and the lagoon was noticably less crowded. I launched from the Alvor side again. The wind seemed strong enough for my 7m bow, but I was wrong, so I had to give up and use the 11m again. What a fabulous session! Big jumps, foot-outs, unhooked rotations, and riding blind kept me busy for a couple of hours.
Day 3, Monday 7 June - after visiting the local Monchique mountains just 20km away, I returned late and launched from the Lagos side. This session was a bit gusty, so it was hard to predict the timing for tricks. So I enjoyed simple big jumps - catching a gust at the right moment can be a lot of fun if you know what to expect!
Tomorrow will be my first lesson here (wind-permitting), and I am ready with a good knowledge of the lagoon. What fun it will be!....

Spot pouco conhecido - Ponta do Mato Com previsões de vento Leste e poucos spots aqui há volta que funcionem com esta direcção, resolvi ir, com o meu amigo Saiote, dar uma espreitadela a um spot onde vou várias vezes durante o Inverno, a Ponta do Mato, excelente para ventos entre Sudeste a Nordeste.
O acesso é feito pelo Miratejo, numa estrada (que podia estar em melhores condições, mas acessível) que ladeia os limites da Base Naval do Alfeite e acaba num modesto cafezito com vista para a baía do Seixal. Um pouco antes do café há uma praia de areia com uma ilha formada a uns 150m da beira-mar.
As areias modificam-se bastante, mas para já está excelente, formando uma baía que permite navegar protegido das pequenas ondas do rio e com vento side-on, enquanto que o resto da praia fica mesmo onshore com Leste. Nesta zona temos praticamente sempre pé, ficando mesmo sem água na maré vazia.
Foi fácil estacionar e o único senão deste spot é mesmo a grande quantidade de lixo natural (troncos, canas e detritos) e algumas zonas com espuma mal cheirosa! Ainda assim a água pareceu-me de qualidade bastante aceitável.
O vento esteve fraquinho mas a ausência de correntes e a água lisa permitiu ainda fazer uns bordos e uns kiteloops com o Boss 12m ;)

Tempestade de fevereiro em Aveiro No dia 26 de Fevereiro, Aveiro tambem foi fostigada pela tempestade que se fez sentir um pouco por todo o pais, com ventos a registarem 64kts de maxima pelas 16h. Um pouco mais cedo, cerca das 14h quando o vento ainda estava fraquito, 30kts, os mais corajosos entraram com 7mt para uma sessão de kite. Fica aqui o registo desses momentos. HARDCORE

1a sessão deste ano (em Portugal) Finalmente lá me renunciei ao frio perante previsões bastante boas para os últimos 2 dias! Tinha também os GK 2010 novos para experimentar portanto não haviam dúvidas... VAMOS AO KITE!!
Resolvi ir dar uma voltinha, no Sábado, dia 20, até à Fonte da Telha onde esteve reunido um grupo simpático de riders de vários níveis!
Experimentei o Trix 9m que me surpreendeu bastante. É sem dúvida um kite bastante mais evoluído que o shape de 2009. Gostei principalmente da maior rigidez do kite, e o ser um pouco mais rápido.
Sacou-me lá uns kiteloops também bastante interessantes :) gostei do feeling elástico e power do kite. Não é de facto um kite para saltar alto, pois coloca-se algo atrás na janelas de vento, tornando-o mais indicado para Freestyle e Ondas.
No Domingo foi dia de Lagoa de Albufeira. Depois de chegar já tarde, por volta das 15h, fui montar o Sonic 8m (ja tinha andado de Trix no dia antes). Assim que comecei a dar a bomba veio uma chuvada descomunal que me obrigou a largar o kite atrás de um carro e enfiar-me no meu para secar!
Quando passou a chuvada achei que isto havia de durar mais uns tempinhos, e fui montar o kite. Fiz muuuito bem, pois ainda andei cerca de 1 hora com rajadas até os 25nós em certas zonas da Lagoa (como estava SO entra mesmo pela boca da lagoa acelerando o vento).
Também curti bastante do kite, está também mais sólido pois foiu retirada maior parte do bico no Bordo Ataque.
A barra usei a mesma, tem um grip melhor, mas de resto mantem o mesmo sistema de quick release e ajuste da distáncia ao Depower strap, que dá para meter mais perto ou mais longe, mais ou menos depower, sem alterar o comprimento das linhas da frente.
2 belos dias... com poucas fotos... sorry! Se arranjar mais boto praki!

Valeu, esta sessão de inverno!!! Foi sem dúvida uma das melhores sessões de Fonte da Telha, em que tenha navegado!
Lá combinei com o Vasco, e ás 9h da manhã (brrrr...) lá estávamos, com os carneirinhos no outside a darem o mote!
Vento Sul, que entra perfeito side shore, cerca de 20nós, onda de 1,0m... Foi uma sessão diferente, devido à diferente direcção habitual do vento, o que fez um "goofy" como eu sentir-se em casa, surfando em Frontside! eheh
Um Obrigado valente ao Vasco Santos, pelas fotos que aqui coloco!! ;)
